Toronto Blue Jays Honored for Defensive Excellence
The Toronto Blue Jays have earned the 2026 American League Team Gold Glove, recognizing their outstanding defensive performance throughout the Major League Baseball season. The award, presented by Rawlings on Friday night, highlights the club's achievement as the top defensive team in the American League using advanced statistical measures.
Rawlings Team Gold Glove and Its Criteria
Introduced following the 2020 season, the Rawlings Team Gold Glove awards distinguish the best defensive teams in both the American and National Leagues. Winners are determined using the SABR Defensive Index (SDI), a sabermetric model developed by the Society of American Baseball Research. This index evaluates team defense through various advanced metrics.
Blue Jays' Defensive Metrics in 2026
During the 2026 season, the Blue Jays ranked highly in several key baseball defense metrics. The club was:
- Third in the American League for defensive runs saved (51)
- Fifth in outs above average (14)
- First in fielding run value (46)
- Achieved a team .983 fielding percentage
These results solidified their position as the premier defensive unit in the American League.
Historical Achievement for Toronto
This recognition marks the third time in the past four seasons that the Toronto Blue Jays have won the American League Team Gold Glove award. The repeated success underlines the team's commitment to defensive excellence on the field.
Individual Defensive Standouts
While five Blue Jays were finalists for individual Rawlings Gold Glove awards—including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Andrés Giménez, Brandon Valenzuela, Nathan Lukes, and José Soriano—none took home the individual honor in 2026. However, Andrés Giménez stood out as Toronto’s top defender by fielding run value, recording a value of 16 while making a smooth transition back to the shortstop position after playing primarily at second base since 2022.
National League Recognition
The Chicago Cubs were named the National League winner of the 2026 Team Gold Glove award, joining the Blue Jays in being recognized for defensive proficiency across Major League Baseball.
About MLB Defensive Awards
The Team Gold Glove awards complement the long-standing tradition of individual Rawlings Gold Glove accolades, broadening the celebration of defensive accomplishments by highlighting team-wide fielding excellence. These recognitions continue to reinforce the importance of defense in baseball and provide teams with incentive to emphasize skillful play in the field.
