Invasion returns this August – and the fight is far from over

There’s a good chance you weren’t even watching Invasion. In the crowded landscape of Apple TV+ programming, even the platform’s most ambitious sci-fi series has sometimes struggled to hold its own against two other genre giants released in quick succession. Silo and Foundation are both massive properties with dedicated followings, leaving Invasion to fight for fan attention in what’s essentially a war of attrition.

Fans of the show exist, but with some difficulty, Invasion has been able to build its audience. It’s received decidedly mixed reviews, particularly in the early going, when the deliberate pacing of season 1 left viewers uncertain as to whether the storytelling would ever actually pick up. Some fans of the series have spoken openly of love/hate relationships with the series.

All of that being said, there are things about the show that Invasion gets very right. From the cinematography to the creative decisions, the series has always set itself apart with the goal of telling bigger, more audacious stories. To date, Invasion may not always hit the mark, but its efforts are always visible. Apple TV+ has dropped the trailer for season 3, and it appears that the time for Invasion to finally step into its own is fast approaching.

Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, most famous for producing and co-writing the multiple X-Men films in the popular franchise, as well as starring as the producer/writer of The Martian, which went on to be nominated for a variety of Oscars. The concept behind Invasion is at once grand in scale while also intriguing in its character focus: an alien invasion as seen through the eyes of the normal people living all over the world. With the usage of English, Japanese, and Pashto languages, Invasion firmly plants its global reach in the personal views of its characters.

Season 1 tackled the earliest days of the extraterrestrial invasion, and while we were introduced to the aliens, they were very much not the main focus. The creeping terror was more in the emotional and relationship dramas taking place between the characters than it was an alien attack. This frustrated some viewers who were likely hoping for more of an action-oriented alien invasion movie.

The big finale of season 1 made clear that the full-scale alien invasion was now inevitable. Season 2 doubled down on more action and higher stakes, which gave the second installment of Invasion a fresh kick. As much as the show’s first year struggled with its pacing, season 2 moved quickly once it set its course. This new season took its story in a new direction and gave its characters a new purpose: to adapt and survive in the face of an Earth transformed in every way. Humanity has been all but driven into small, safe encampments, where the challenges of daily life often forced the characters to make hard choices.

Season 3 Characters Reunite for a Doomsday Mission Against Alien Mothership

Season 3 of Invasion finds its world two years in the future from the previous season. The threat they face has also grown and changed in horrifying ways. According to the official show description, the disparate perspectives of the main cast will finally converge for the first time. Characters that were located all over the world in the previous seasons are uniting for a first-of-its-kind mission inside the alien mothership. This newfound collaboration is a major sea change for Invasion, which has so far found much of its power through dispersed storylines.

The aliens themselves have evolved into their “apex” form, which unleashes their long tendrils that quickly spread across the Earth. The danger is clear, and this new season promises to be all about the final stand: it will take every character’s unique skills and insights as well as their hard-fought survival instincts to stand a chance of saving humanity. New friendships and allegiances will form as the main cast of Invasion begins their mission, and old relationships will be tested, perhaps even broken under the pressure.

Returning to the series are Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the loathed Silicon Valley tech billionaire Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. The newest addition to the main cast of Invasion is Erika Alexander, who will be joining the series as a regular.

Storytelling-wise, season 3 will have the opportunity to wrap up long arcs and give viewers the high-stakes, big-picture action and monster confrontation they’ve been waiting for since the season premiere. It will also be a chance to double down on the deep, human side of the show that’s been such a draw to the series as well.

It remains to be seen whether Invasion can truly win over skeptics and new viewers, but from the trailer and what we know of what’s to come, this is shaping up to be a series more confident in its vision. It’s poised to finally wed its human heart to bigger set pieces, even higher stakes, and a sense of urgency that can push a show into ‘must-see’ territory.

Invasion season 3 will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025. For fans new and old, it won’t be long until we find out whether this globe-spanning sci-fi epic can deliver the thrills and emotion it’s been promising.
