Stranger Things Season 5 to End on New Year’s Eve
Netflix has released a longer teaser for the fifth season of Stranger Things, the last of the hit sci-fi show. The preview is everything fans have been craving: a slow build-up to the epic clash between Hawkins’ heroes and demons from the Upside Down.
In just 39 seconds, the trailer takes us on a whirlwind of suspenseful imagery and snippets of tension. There’s a dive into the Upside Down and the Rifts weeping into Hawkins, disquieting glimpses of demo-dogs tracking their prey through corridors, and fast-paced bursts of explosions, globs of blood, and flamethrowers. It’s all the fanfare, all the build-up, and then an exoskeleton-wearing Linda Hamilton bails out of a helicopter and into the action fully armed.
In the season 4 finale, Vecna—the big bad boggart behind all the evil and terrors in the Upside Down—rips open a gigantic gate to reveal that the Upside Down, in all its glory, has fully engulfed Hawkins. The longer teaser shows that season 5 will jump forward a few months to the fall of 1987. This neatly ties in with the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, the event that set the whole series in motion in season 1.
Season 5 will have eight episodes, but they’re not “regular” episodes. The episodes are each intended to be feature-length, meaning that the final Stranger Things season will effectively be eight feature-length movies in one.
The Synopsis Sets Up the Climax
The synopsis hints at both grand-scale threats and emotional stakes. Hawkins has changed forever now that the Rifts have been fully opened. The old Hawkins crew and their new allies are driven by only one goal: to find and kill Vecna. But they have no idea where he is or what he’s planning next. The U.S. government has cordoned off Hawkins with the military and redoubled its efforts to hunt down Eleven, so she’s back on the run.
The final battle to save Hawkins is coming, and it’s happening on the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, which is ominously approaching in the coming weeks. As the trailer promises, Hawkins is facing an all-out war this time around, and the enemies are more ominous, more cunning, and more deadly than before. The only thing that can save the day is the full party — all allies together, one last time.
Who’s Back, Who’s New, and Who’s Dead?
The main characters are all coming back, and the show also welcomes several of the recurring actors. Amybeth McNulty and Gabriella Pizzolo will return as Vicki and Suzie (Dustin’s girlfriend). Jamie Campbell Bower will be back as Vecna, the baddie with the creepy voice that had a brief but memorable run in season 4.
And Stranger Things has cast a host of new characters as well, led by Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay, the tough-as-nails doctor who once saved the day. Other fresh faces include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.
The teaser also teases some moments sure to make the fans go wild. In one segment, Lucas and a group of others hide from demo-dogs, in a scene that mimics the classic Jurassic Park kitchen sequence with velociraptors. There are nods to some heart-pounding horror stuff as well, like hearing Vecna’s low “found you.”
The teaser also has moments with serious emotional weight. Eddie Munson’s gravestone is seen in the teaser, with the words “Burn in hell” spray-painted over it. In one fell swoop, we’re reminded that Eddie sacrificed himself to save Hawkins from Vecna in the season 4 finale. But he may have saved the town, but Eddie is far from a hero in the eyes of the many in Hawkins. Eddie’s death was one of the most heartbreaking Stranger Things has put us through since Bob Newby in season 2.
The Town will feel like a Stranger to Hawkins’ Heroes.
The most immediately contentious news is that Netflix is not dropping all eight episodes at once, instead opting to release Stranger Things season 5 in three separate chunks. This will doubtless vex impatient fans, who will likely need to take a hard hand on themselves to avoid binge-watching the first two volumes before the third is due out. Volume 1 will premiere on November 26, 2025, with Volume 2 dropping a month later on Christmas Day (December 25, 2025). The finale lands on New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2025) —no better time to hit the feels as 2025 is packed up and goodbye-ed.
