Nine teens have been arrested and charged in the June 24 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, in a dispute authorities say “over a girl.” Florence County deputies and local prosecutors are handling the case.

Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the teen’s body on June 24, first “on the side of First Neck Road and then down an embankment,” officials said in a press release. The shooting victim had been struck multiple times by bullets, authorities say.

The remote road where Wright’s body was discovered is about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, according to local reports. A day later, police arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway. Officials say the suspect shot and killed Wright following an argument between them.

Investigators say other teens were involved, and in the weeks since the shooting, more arrests were made. In addition to Raper, local officials announced charges against several other teens they say helped set up the fatal shooting. Prosecutors have filed charges against all nine suspects.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) said in a press release that it is “attempting to determine who was responsible” for Wright’s death. “This is currently a full investigation that could include multiple people or codefendants,” the FCSO wrote.

The initial case announcement said Raper was one of several “young men” who were with Wright that night. “They were reportedly video recording the incident as it was happening,” investigators said in the release.

Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye told reporters that the shooting began after one of the suspects — Raper — allegedly pulled out a gun during an argument and “threatened the life of the victim.” The victim is not named in the press release.

“The others that we have that are juveniles all assisted in finding where [Wright] was at so they could get him in there with an armed individual, at which point we have heard in other statements that a shooting occurred,” Joye said.

Wright’s mother Ashley Lindsey told Fox News Digital that her son “got shot by some of his friends” and “friends of friends.” “It’s bad because all my baby did was just get into an argument,” Lindsey said.

The mother added that court proceedings have added to her heartbreak. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy. I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby,” Lindsey said.

Wright’s own girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, was among those arrested by deputies. Officials say she brought Raper to the scene, knowing that he had a gun and intended to use it against Wright.

She and Wright’s three other co-defendants were initially arrested on accessory before the fact charges, according to a press release from Florence County officials. Kistenmacher, Kendall, Belviso, and Kearns were held on a $20,000 surety bond.

Prosecutors say the teens helped plan the fatal shooting, and in addition to accessory charges, the state’s attorney charged three other youths with murder, according to WBTW-TV. In South Carolina, prosecutors may charge minors as adults for certain violent crimes.

The murder charges have been leveled at Kendall, Belviso, and Kearns, who the FCSO say are among the suspects who “knowingly and willfully acted” to set up Wright and Raper for the fatal confrontation. Raper faces a charge of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Three teens arrested in connection with Wright’s death have been charged as adults. Raper, an adult, and Kendall, an 18-year-old, are being held without bond, while Belviso, 17, and Kearns, 17, were released on $20,000 surety bonds last week.

Florence County officials have declined to comment further about the case, citing the pending investigation. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Assistant Florence County Public Defender Kristina Bateson said that her office would not be able to speak about the case. Bateson said all of the arrested suspects have hired lawyers.

Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, has expressed her thoughts online. In a Facebook post earlier this month, she offered details of the fatal shooting. “I’ve been morgue for him now it’s my turn to be here for myself because the pain is so deep. I wish I could die. I don’t want to be here,” she wrote.

Newsweek reached out to Lindsey for comment but did not receive a reply before publication. Florence County officials and prosecutors declined to comment for this report.
