NASA faces delays for the Axiom Mission 4 launch due to an air leak on the International Space Station. NASA along with Roscosmos will assess the situation further which has led to the postponement of the commercial mission intended to transport four astronauts to the space station. The agency acknowledged the launch delay but withheld specific details. Various reports have highlighted the leak as a critical concern because much of the International Space Station’s hardware has been in orbit for nearly three decades.
The space station has previously encountered problems with air leaks. Reports indicate that the ISS has experienced a gradual decrease in cabin pressure since 2019. The transfer tunnel of the Russian Zvezda service module, which stands as one of the International Space Station’s oldest components, has been recognized as the primary leak source. The PrK section of the ISS joins the Zvezda module to a docking port that Soyuz crew capsules and Progress resupply vehicles often utilize. Russian cosmonauts performed multiple repair attempts to fix the small cracks in this section. Efforts to repair the air leaks slowed the loss of a couple of pounds per day but failed to stop it entirely. The best solution implemented to stop the air leakage has been to maintain the PrK module hatch in a sealed position except when docking operations require its opening.
Roscosmos reported successful PrK module repairs with a “completely sealed” status and NASA confirmed no leak rates in that location. At first glance this development appeared to represent a significant advancement. However, things quickly became confusing. After repairing the PrK leak the ISS air pressure still decreased. The station continued to lose pressure according to two sources who could not identify the exact source of the leak.
Experts now believe that the hatch seals leading into the PrK module might present the current problem. Although the PrK interior may have stopped leaking air, air from the rest of the station could be entering through the hatch seals. The PrK module maintains consistent pressure yet the entire ISS experiences a persistent pressure loss. The persistent yet hard-to-pinpoint nature of this problem has led NASA to implement careful procedures. A leading industry insider reported to Ars Technica that NASA’s top officials are concerned about the current situation and how it affects the structural integrity of the ISS.
NASA pushed back the scheduled Thursday launch of Axiom Mission 4. In a brief statement, the agency said: NASA and Roscosmos now have more time to assess the situation and figure out if extra troubleshooting steps are needed due to the Axiom Mission 4 postponement.
There’s another layer of concern: The continuous leaks could indicate high cycle fatigue within the material. Repeated stress exposure over time leads to this condition in metals like aluminum which form a significant part of the ISS structure. Repeated bending of a metal clothes hanger will lead to its inevitable breakage. This same principle applies to spacecraft. Metal fatigue can trigger unexpected and disastrous failures as demonstrated when metal fatigue caused the fuselage of an Aloha Airlines aircraft to tear apart during flight in 1988.
NASA considers structural cracking on the ISS as its top concern according to its internal 5-by-5 risk matrix which examines both threat probability and severity. Crew members currently face no immediate danger yet the future consequences present serious concerns.
NASA has not delivered any new updates and has not planned any press conferences to discuss the matter further. In response to media inquiries, the agency has reiterated a single point: NASA confirms that the space station crew continues their standard operations without safety concerns.
Still, the silence leaves many questions unanswered. This latest leak confirms the difficulties NASA faces in keeping operational a decades-old space lab like the ISS while its aging systems endure wear and tear in space’s harsh conditions.
